I won the nikasil lottery!

Who hoo! I just finished pulling the left bank of heads off, the heads look near perfect, the pistons look great, and the cylinders are slightly magnetic. Life is good.
Tomorrow I pull the other side off, hopefully everything will be well with the world.
Just thought I'd share.
Now back to your regularly scheduled program.................

congrats! pictures of the "bottoms" of your cylinders would be nice ... I fear mine are alusil, but I'd love to see another visual data point.

Fishcop 08-30-2004 08:23 PM

Did I ever tell my story of the 2.7 we once pulled down to show nikasil on one bank and alusil on the other....

KobaltBlau 08-30-2004 08:46 PM

no John, (not that I read), tell it! I bet there were some other horrifying details in that engine... did the pistons match the cylinders???

KobaltBlau - Fear not the Alusil...

red-beard, thank you.

Actually the only reason I fear the alusil is because I have JEs in mind for my next rebuild (I know you can bore and replate, but every cost adds up). However, whether mine are alusil probably won't matter as I'll probably end up rebuilding a different 3.0 and keeping mine in its current perfect running condition.

However, a pic of '80 SC 3.0 nikasil cylinders would help me choose my core carefully!

John, that's cold man ;)

Andy, I'll snap some pictures tonight and post them, after i check out the carnage from the one broken head stud from the side I haven't disassembled yet.

Funny thing was, the hardest thing about getting the heads off was removing that little woodruff key from the cams without buggering them all up. I hate little parts like that.

KobaltBlau 08-31-2004 08:42 AM

Thanks, Sam.

Fishcop 08-31-2004 04:22 PM

Yeah, only messin' with ya ;)

But I really did hear about someone finding a mixture of alusil and nikasil in a badly rebuilt engine... it might have been on this board, but I can't remember.

Halm 08-31-2004 05:19 PM

Not to hijack the thread, but can you tell with the engine in-place if you have alusil or nikasil?

sammyg2 08-31-2004 07:27 PM

here's the pictures of the cylinders, top and bottom:

Thank you Sammy! That's just what I was looking for. I'm almost certain mine are KS, which would very very likely make them alusil.

Halm, you'll want to do a search for that one, but the short answer is you can't tell for sure. however as you might guess from the first part of this post here you can rationalize and guess!
