Well,
After seeing the broken exhaust valve guide on my 930/02 3.0 Carrera, I realized that I was going to get a chance to see my crank soon. I bought the engine that had a valve job around 10K ago. I figured that I was just going to have to do some top end seal work. After seeing the broken valve guide, and listing to my Fathers good advice, I realized that it was time to rebuild to learn all the engines mysteries. Attached is the picture of the fun I had. One side of the engine was dilvar and one side steel. So I pulled the dilvar. They all cam out fine except one. After much heat and continuous pressure it finally came free. Thanks Wayne for the advice in your book!! Then to the flywheel. I took care to pull the first three out, but got sloppy on the last three. I figured this out when I saw shards of the tool and bolt fly in the air. All but one bolt came out after much coaxing. It was then that we decided to weld the broken tool to the stripped bolt. Thanks to one of Dad's friend and his great welding, the bolt came out and now serves as a monument of the cost of haste. I would recommend this fix over grinding it out. The flywheel or the pilot bearing race are none the worst for wear. The rest of the engine has checked out fine. Now to the machine shop.

Never thought about welding the tool to the bolt. Pretty cool idea.

NIce weld too! Great solution. At least it was on the last one.

The joys of doing a restoration out at my parents farm. Everybody around knows how to weld. Bob Wagner was the artist with the stick welder.
Other options were to weld a nut to the bolt head, or if the head is broken off, weld a washer and nut to the top of the stud. Damn I need to learn how to weld!
