Fan/Alternator Hosuing Interchangability
I am rebuilding my 3.0 SC motor and yesterday noticed that my Fan shroud is cracked in several places. This motor will be going into my 73.5 T. I have the original 2.4 Liter CIS motor.
MY question is: Can I use the fan shroud from the 2.4 for my 3.0 rebuild? The part numbers are different but the used parts ads on this website indicate that the early fan shrouds are interchangable up to 1989. |
interchangable as in will fit the engine cases, but there are different depths to fit the various alternator sizes. if you have the alternator that's matched to the housing, then it will work. the amp output will probably be 50 or 55 for the 73, and the SC one 75.

I am planning to install the rebuilt 3.0 SC motor into the 73.5 T. The car will be an RSR clone and will run PMO carbs.
I was planning on using the original 2.4 CIS engine wiring harness and alternator anyway for the swap. It seems my best option at this point would be to use the fan, alternator, housing & wiring harness from the original 73.5 T CIS setup. Now...If the fan shroud/alternator housing from the CIS motor is crack free I should be in good shape. Am I on the right track?? |
Tom,
You may need to check the crank pully too. The 2.4 should have a 1.3:1 ratio and the SC can either have a 1.8:1 or 1.67:1 ratio depending upon the year model. I am not sure if they got this ratio by just changing the fan pully or was the crank pully also changed. If you look at the part numbers, they are different. I would just put the 2.4 crank pully on the 3.0 just to be sure. Have fun!!! |
Also check the fan size to be correct that they will fit properly into the housing.
