964 engine rebuild question
I recently had a situation where I lost all the oil and oil pressure while on the freeway in 6pm fast traffic and travelled between 1/4 and 1/2 mile with the engine sounding like a bucket of loose bolts before I was able to pull over and shut down. After fixing the broken oil lines and cracked oil tank (thats another story), the engine started up and by all appearances so far is running fine--however, I don't trust it now and want a rebuild (liability insurance will pay for it less depreciation).
I started the pricing research at my local Porsche dealer. The service manager told me that 964 engines are not rebuildable outside of the factory because of the special tools needed to work inside that aren't available. They have a "factory rebuild" transplant that costs $7K for the complete engine (everything except the clutch) with a 2 year factory unlimited mileage warranty. They also wanted $3k to remove and install. That sounds like a great price for the engine provided someone else installs it for more like $1K.... He also said no independants can properly rebuild a 964 engine. Can anyone comment on having a 964 engine rebuilt locally (locally anywhere but the factory that is). |
Henry,
This is the EXPERT you want to rebuild your motor! He is not in the valley but a local builder here in So. California. Do a search on this forum using his name and you will see many examples of his work. ------------------------------- Henry Schmidt SUPERTEC PERFORMANCE 2951 Grace Lane #A Costa Mesa, Ca. 92626 phone- (714) 429-1863 fax - (714) 429-1864 email - supertec911@earthlink.net www.supertecperformance.com ------------------------------ Here is a link to one of his recent threads. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/187022-motor-meister-strikes-again.html Im sure he will drop in and reply to this thread in good time. Hope this helps. |
I just thought of another EXPERT that is a bit more local the the fore mentioned.
------------------------------- TRE Motorsports Inc. 11046 Chandler Blvd. N. Hollywood CA 91601 Phone: 818-509-0257 Fax: 818-509-2638 info@tremotorsports.com ------------------------------- They are in North Hollywood. Like Supertec if you do a search on this site for TRE you will read nothing but good things about them. |
I have the "special tools" to rebuild a 964 so they are available. That said, if the motor is completely rebuilt at the Porsche factory) for $7K that is a great deal I think. It sounds too good to be true to me though.

Thanks for the recommendations...I will follow up. The $7K price for a factory rebuild does sound like a great deal if its true. It came from a good source--directly from the service manager at the local Porsche dealer. And yes, I believe there was salesmanship, and maybe some porsche arrogance in the statement......

Henry,
Sorry to hear about your distress. You will get good advice here. By the way, welcome to the Forum. It is customary to post pictures of your 911. Best, Grady |
Here's a couple of pics. The one with oil pouring out of the oil tank area is the result of a AAA tow guy jacking up my car on the oil regulator (under the oil tank), splitting the oil tank and breaking a couple of oil lines. This was the cause of the engine woes.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1098570602.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1098570950.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1098572218.jpg

Sorry to hear your misfortune. However, dropping the engine isn't that difficult. You can save the $$ and do it yourself. Let alone, you can rebuild the engine yourself too! I just finished mine a few weeks ago. With the hosts rebuild book, the internet, and staying at the Holiday Inn Express, you can do it yourself!

You're right....given the motivation, time and space I know I could do it. As I have none of these things at this time I'm going to let someone else have the pleasure (or pain).
Following up on the $7K factory rebuild engine I was quoted by the dealer, it turned out to be a Boxster engine for $7.3K--the 964 factory rebuild is really $18,943 (+ core charge) a number I know is accurate as I made them show me the price book. |
I thought $7K for a factory 964 rebuild was too good to be true.

I was going to get in line for a factory 3.6 for 7k.
Sorry to hear about your issue, I hope for a speedy recovery. |
In July of 2002 a factory rebuilt 964 motor could be bought for $7721.94USD from a USA based dealer. The price has almost doubled in the past 6 months.

Jason,
someone else on rennlist had mentioned a number in the region of $8K. Where did you get your quote from?--maybe they have an extra motor in the back of their warehouse they want to get rid of (I can dream..can't I). |
Unfortunately the original quote I received was from over 2 years ago and since then Porsche prices have increased a little bit.
