adding boost question

ok, I have been surfing the web, which I know is dangerous.

I see alot of talk about effective compression ratios. I see an equation like ECR = (1+(pressure/1 bar) * SCR

Then I read stuff like your can easily run an ECR of 16:1, but can't run a SCR over say 12:1.

Can anyone explain, if this little equation is acurate and how is it ok to run higher ECR than SCR?
