Question Painting Cast Iron 911 Cylinders

Can anyone recommend a paint for the cast iron cylinders on my 2.4?

I am aware that too much or the wrong kind of paint can interfere with heat transfer. Rust doesn't transfer heat very effectively either.

Anyone try any of the PJ1 motorcycle engine case & barrel paints?

Thanks,

Bill

high heat black wrinkle finish. black dissipates heat too. heat them in the oven after painting to get the best wrinkle.

You might want to consider a high heat dispersant powder coating. There is real data out there that proves the coatings work in disapating heat and evening out any hot spots.

Until there is data that shows how much an improvement in using a "heat dispersant" paint, I'd go with a light spray coat of flat black on top of clean base metal.

I just had the oppurtunity to take apart a 2003 996 GT3 RS engine...The last people that turned a wrench on this engine was Porsche motorsports(or peter Dawe)..

the piston skirts seem to have been coated with "something"

the piston tops seem to have been coated with "something"

Thermal dispersants/barriers apparently do work.

I dont see any reason why coating the cylinders with thermal dispersant would hurt

The data shows that the coating disapates heat 2x faster than bare aluminum - pretty impressive knowing aluminum's properties. On the other hand, if you think this is "snake oil", don't do it...

If you are interested, use Google and do a search on Thermal Dispersants. Or try this:

They supply most of the automotive coating people.

Thanks for the link. I know I will be shopping there. Dry film coatings on the piston skirts and ceramic coatings on pistions, valves and posstibly more. Oh and I can't forget the jet-hot like exhaust coatings.

Other than Techline's claims or other companies that use Techline's product, I didn't see the data you were referring to on their website. In addition, I couldn't find any thermal dispersant studies during a Google search. Do you have any data you can share?

Thanks,
Sherwood

Just this afternoon, I held a 2003 996 GT3RS piston.. and compared it to an earlier cupcar piston.

The -03 GT3RS piston has some sort of coating on it!

This engine was from a car that ran the 24 hours of Lemans last year..

thermal barriers look evident, anti friction coatings are evident..

Someone someplace is applying these coatings..

I love to open up an engine, where the last people that touched it works in Weisach

I have used the Techline Coatings thermal dispersant coating on every cast iron cylinder that I have had nikasil plated and have had great success with it. My only complaint with it, and other commercially/professionally applied coatings are that they are susceptible to flaking and chipping.
