Timing marks are not lining up
 

This was an original 914/6 (aka a 911T) engine. I had the crank&rods swapped out for a 2.4. It had 2.2 P&Cs. I ended up going with 2.7 RS P&Cs, after a couple ended up, not out of spec, but nearing the end of useful life. And with that, I ended up changing the cams to true S cams. Nice motor.

After my engine rebuild, the timing marks do not seem to come up at the right time. I swear it always seems the marks are 180 out from what I would expect.

Any ideas?

It runs fine, but the timing marks are no where to be seen when timing off the #1 plug wire. I timed it by ear.

The marks are somewhere between 120 and 180 off from where I would think they should be...

I bet I can find the marks off one of the other plug wires. I'll check tomorrow.

Should work off number 1 or number 4. Others should be 120 degrees before or after depending on cylinder you are looking at. Remember #1 and 4 are at the pully end of the engine (toward the front of car in a 914).

On my 911 the pulley had been redrilled 180 deg out. this made for a bunch of confusion before I figured it out. Pull off the pulley and see if it is the case.

I didn't have time (no pun intended) to check the engine. I spent yesterday swapping carbs. I'll check some night this week.

Not sure why your pulley is indexed incorrrectly. However, each cylinder fires 120º apart. Try connecting the timing light pickup on the plug wire either before or after #1 wire on the cap.

The firing order is 162435, so the adjacent cylinders are either #5 or #6. If the marks now line up, time the engine using that cylinder. It doesn't matter as long as the TDC mark on the pulley truly indicates TDC (for #5 or 6).
