the three pistons on the left side have metal showing through the carbon on the reliefs, as well this piston has breakage on the edge of the relief. No sign of contact on the valves. Could I have caused this damage on tear down when my home made tools caused the chain to slip? Is this piston useable?

The T iron cylinders have light surface rust covering them. What's the best solution for this? blast them? high heat paint?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1100493485.jpg
the main bearings look great although the intermediate shaft bearings are quite worn. Is this normal?

It does look like you did the piston damage. If it was old damage it would be covered with carbon. You'll have to clean up the pistons real good and file away at the damage to see how far it goes. It'll be a judgement call as to if you should re use the pistons.

It's normal for the intermediate shaft bearings to wear a lot more than the others.
