911 2.4 Piston Rings - If not Deves, Who?
Techies,
I am re-ringing 2.4T (cast iron cylinders) and would appreciate some recommendations on piston rings. I have seen some negative comments on Deves. My existing rings are not resusable, this motor i presume had been re-ringed one before and not honed so the rings have a burr on the top edge. Otherwise bores are nice & round & should hone out at the max listed clearance. My other concern is that the rings I would buy would be too closely matched to a smaller bore/clearance not giving me enough "end" to set end gaps properly. I am considering going "gapless" with Total Seal or someone similar. Since I don't need to worry about Nickies/Alusil I should have some flexibility. Knowledgable feedback is gratefully appreciated. I wouldn't sweat this one too much. You have a 2.4 T motor (like myself), and aren't going to be pushing any serious power. I went with Deves because it was the easiest for me to find. Then again, I used 2.2T Kolbenschmidt pistons/cylinders (different ring height than Mahle). The price was right on the P/C's, and I get a compression bump. My cylinders were used, and re-honed also. So far, with 800 miles on the rebuild, it's looking A-OK.

IMO, Total Seal are more gimmick than anything, and definitely not worth the extra price for an application like this.

Goetze is my vote, if available. Another option most people don't consider is just calling up JE. I prefer using their XC ring set (available in most every combination) or secondly their JG.

I am going to give Total Seal a try. Primarily because blowby in a 911 motor is soooo messy. Bill
