How to test an engine that is out?
 

I have a 2.2 engine that is out of a can and have intake (longblock).
Ist there a way to do a leakdown test or some other test on it to see if it needs to be torn apart?

My current approach is to put the intake back on the engine and install the engine in my car, as is. Get it running and then do some tests on it.

Short of running the engine, I don't think there's any definitive way to test it out of the car.

To run the engine, you'd have to have a gearbox installed so the starter can engage the flywheel. You'd need a source of pressurized fuel as well.

You can perform a compression test, but again, you need to crank the engine.

You can do a leakdown test. That'll tell you the integrity of each combusion chamber (piston rings, head gasket, valve seats), but it can't tell if bearings are worn (or even a spun bearing). In addition, it's recommended to perform this on a warmed up engine.

easy enough to install it in the car. you could have it running in an hour or two. a cold leakdown will just make you worry. i took a chance on a 2.7 recently, after the first guy in line for it did a leakdown test with his home made tester. after getting 80% in one hole, he passed. it supposedly was a good runner, and after doing the leakdown myself, and finding about the same results on that hole, i took a plastic hammer and bipped the rockers a few times, (with the tester attached), to blow out any crap between the valve and seat, and it went down to 10%. got lucky.
