Auxillary shaft matches

When matching the auxillary shaft to a motor (the 1 or 0) is this matching to the gear on the crank or is it matching a distance between the shafts in the case?
Thanks,
neilca

The distance between the shafts. The factory shop manual gives the permissable combinations. The case should have a 0 or 1 stamped on it (I forget where it is). Basically if you have a 1 case you need at leat one gear with a 1 on it and if you have a 0 case you need at least one gear with a 0 on it.

It's actually both. The case will have a stamp mark on it, and the crankshaft gears are also sized differently as well. There are two sizes 0 and 1 for the crankshaft gear. See page 213 of the rebulid book.
