just finished stage 1!

spent this evening bolting up the rods to the crank. cleaned it for the final time in the bath. (my wife is away. can you tell?) went overboard with trike-free and air in a can. (waynes got me paranoid about dirt!) went together real nice apart from the last rod. bolted it up and it was sticking at a certain point. £uck it. pulled it apart, cleaned it all up, re lubed it, bolted it back up and its fine so it must have been a bit of poop somewhere. so there you go! stage 2 on the way once my oil pump turns up. and it ONLY took me 4 1/2 hours. jesus.

Pictures, we must have pictures. It improves the jealousy factor.

oh all right then! you twisted my arm! sorry about the image quality-took it using a camcorder pic

the black finish on the rods is the dry film. I replaced the dizzy drive gear with a turbo one (the crank is from a 3.2 Carrera).

More pics to follow!

Good job - mount it to a flywheel when you're working on it (I'm sure you did, but just put it like this to take a photo).

(oh my god, wayne just said 'Good Job' to my rod install! Ive reached the top!) im gonna tell my wife the good news! (and she'll look at me like she does every time i talk about my engine-like she dont' care at all! women.)

Seriously, thanks wayne, its good to hear that from the don!

stage 1.5?

Picked up my case from my machine shop yesterday after having the mains checked for out of round. came back good with two bores out of spec (just) waynes book says 65-65.019- the two bores that were out were measured at 65.020. Is it worth worrying about? when i think of the work involved in machining the case surfaces and line boring for something thats so borderline....... Anyway, had some spare time this afternoon ( a rarity at the moment) so i thought id check the crank in the case. I couldn't be arsed to remove the rods after spending so much time putting the crank together the other night so i fitted it with the rods on and just took my time. it wasn't that fiddly really. There was no binding, it all felt real nice and Im well well pleased!

Its nice to get to this stage after just pumping money into parts, cranks, rods, pistons, machine work, incidentals etc. Feels well worth the time money and effort. I wish that I could have about six months off now and perhaps another £3-5000 to finish it off plus loads of dyno time to set stuff up! Im not asking for much am I? any donations on the money side of things would be great! Ive got paypal!

What engine is that block out of?

-Wayne

adomakin 12-19-2004 12:01 AM

its a euro 78 turbo

Andy

adomakin 12-19-2004 01:10 AM

the engine type is 930/60. in BA's book it says that a 930/60 is a 81/82 turbo..............hmm............I bought it as a 78 turbo! the engine case has a little circle on it (to the right of the part number) with 78/17 stamped inside it. i was led to belive that this was the year that the case was made.

78 or 81/82 - it's the same thing basically.

It's rare to have the journals out of spec on these aluminum cases. Nine times out of ten, they are fine.

Did the shop perform the measurement with all of the case bolts tightened, and all of the outer studs torqued to the proper values? That's the only way you can measure it...

-Wayne

they did. i was going to just torque up the case through bolts but they ended up spinning some nuts on the perimeter studs anyway. what do you think about the ever so slightly out of spec measurements wayne? is it worth worrying about?

Wayne 962 12-19-2004 01:38 AM

If it's out of spec, then it's out of spec, and needs to be line bored. It will only get worse if you bolt it together and the bearings are loose.

If I were you though, I would take it in to somewhere else for a 2nd opinion / measurement.

hmm...fair enough. i do have somewhere else i can take it....What a pain in the arse! I can see where you are coming from though, maybe the first shop was wrong. (lets hope so!)

Cheers,

A 2nd opinion would probably be cheaper than line boring the case. Was there any damage to this bearing? (spun bearing)? If yes, then that makes sense - have the case line bored...

-Wayne

adomakin 12-19-2004 04:27 AM

the engine had spun a bearing i think, so it woul make sense as to the out of spec bore

Andy

Wayne 962 12-19-2004 11:03 AM

Then yes, this should be line bored. If it's out of spec, and you don't fix it, it will have a propensity to spin another bearing.

Or, you can have the case halves machined and the bores brought back to std/std. But, I don't know of anyone in the UK who can do that procedure...

The firm that Im using can do the machine work. they are thurston engineering in ongar (essex) wayne, what makes an engine spin a bearing?
