Case Disassembly- Large Slotted Plug

911-o-philes,

I have split the cases on my 2.4 & it is off to the shop for hot tanking. How difficult is it to remove the large slotted plug that appears to seal the large internal oil passage. I obviously don't have a screwdriver that wide.

Any tips other then special tool xyz$$!! ? How tight is it typically?

While I am in the neighborhood, where are the most detailed instructions, preferably with photos for the oil bypass modification?

Still looking for that nice set of 2.2T pistons.

Thanks,

Bill

This plug covers an oil piston and spring. I think most people replace it with a hex head plug during the rebuild. If you're going to replace it, you could loosen it with some vise grips, although it shouldn't be super tight.

screwdriver or chisel and a hammer, in a pinch. set the screwdriver in the end of the slot and knock it counter-clockwise with the hammer.

Thanks for the tip, John. Makes sense to me. Is the plug a straight thread or taper thread? Metric?

It's a straight metric thread, but it's designed to hold the spring in position, so it's a special Porsche part.

You can get that off with some vice-grips - just replace it with the updated version that has a hex-head on it for easy removal...

Tape the outside of the nut. Use a pipe wrench on it to loosen. Dress the edges from burrs you might have made on removal and put it back on with the monkey wrench. Or buy the hex head so you don't have to guess on torque.

I only put 3 tiny nicks in mine.

Lee 78sc 8000k on rebuild. No leaks.
