3.2 throttle return spring differences
Anyone ever notice that some 3.2's motors have one throttle return spring and some have two?
The '85 3.2 motor in the shop is the 2nd motor I've seen that only has one throttle return spring and no evidence of having a hook on the bottom of the manifold for a 2nd spring. The other "monospring" motor was an '89. All the other 3.2's I've seen have two throttle return springs. -Chris EDIT: If you car only has 1, could you tell me what year it is? |
Hey Chris,
I think it would help if you posted a picture of the throttle return springs that you are looking at. I had completely the wrong idea of what you were looking at when you first asked me. Maybe with a picture guys will know exactly what you are looking at and will be more able to reply. Just an opinion. Rich |
Chris,
No image needed for me but I agree with Rich that a pic would be helpful for some of the guys who may not know what/where you are referring to: EDIT: Actually, an image was needed for me! Doh!!! My '88 3.2L to 3.5L : One spring My friends '85 3.2L to 3.4L: One spring Ralph P.S. - IIRC there is also a spring in the throttle body, but I don't think you are referring to that, right? That would be considered a 3rd spring. |
Thanks guys, good idea. I'll post some pictures tonight.

Here is a picture of the double return spring setup as viewed between the intake runners for #1 and #2:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1107402166.jpg Here you can see extra spring on the right: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1107403263.jpg Here is the view from the flywheel side of the motor. The bell crank lever that the 2nd spring attaches to is different than earlier motors. Instead of being one flat piece, it looks like a "hangman" symbol or for you mechanical engineering types, it looks like a the symbol for torque (Gamma) only backwards. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1107402513.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1107402563.jpg I looked in the PET tonight and according to the that, the single springs were used up to '85 and the double springs were used from '86. That doesn't jibe with the single spring '89 motor I have or with Ralph's '88. -Chris |
Ah! Ralph and I posted at the same time. Now that you know which springs I mean, do you need to change your answer?
