Early vs. Late Intermediate Shaft

Upon inspecting the chain housings on my '69 engine (in search of source of odd rubbing/grinding sound) I found two 6mm diameter pins loose in the housing.

From previous posts we have determined that these are likely the pins used to stake the intermediate shaft gear to the shaft. I haven't yet split the case to verify this though.

Here's the question:

Upon showing the pins to a reputable machine shop (Ollie's) and comparing the parts to a few int. shafts laying around, it seems that only the earlier shafts use 3 pins and 3 bolts. The newer shafts use 6 bolts. The guy at the machine shop had never seen a magnesium case with the early style int. shaft. He stated he had only seen the later style shaft used with the mag case. Viewed from the cover plate opening, it appears that I have the newer shaft. It also should be noted that this engine was machined to receive the int. shaft bearing update when it was rebuilt.

Has anyone heard of a newer style shaft that uses the pins to stake the gear?

Thanks!
