turbo question
I was over at my friends house last night when I saw a turbo lying on his coffee table. Thinking, that's strange, I look at it and it turns out its a turbo from a 944. He doesn't need it and I was wondering if that turbo could/should go into my 84 911. Any ideas? I'm not sure what year the 944 was. And, how much would have to be done to my car to make it work?

The turbo itself is almost useless. What you need is a complete package, plumbing, intercooler, wastegate, complete trubo exhaust system, and on and on.
Think of it this way. You just got a great deal on a nice ornate front entry door. Now all you need is the house to put it on!:D |
LOL. thanks for the info... i think i'm going to pass it up unless he has everything else lying in his closet.

unless the "everything else" is for a 911, it is also nearly useless. A K26 (from 944 turbo) could probably be used for a low boost application on a 911, but as asphaltgambler said, it's nearly the easiest part of the complex turbo puzzle.

Where do you recommend finding a turbo conversion kit for a 78' 911SC 3.0? I have looked and can't find it.
|
If you have the turbo I can sell you most of the other parts I am no longer using since I am switching to EFI and headers.
|
You can't use the 944 turbo for your conversion in any case.
The turbo used on the 930 are oil cooled only. 944 turbos have an inlet for oil and water. AFJuvat |
ah, very good point, AFJuvat. I hadn't thought about that.
|
Totally different turbos. 930 uses 3DLZ or K27, 951 uses watercooled K26.
|
I'm not saying a 951 turbo is in any way compatible with a 930 system, but of course you could build a custom system around a K26, but you would want to use one without a water jacket.
Of course these days if you are going to build a custom system there are many modern turbos that are more attractive, even for a low-boost setup. |
