Hyd Carrera tensioners in high lift/rev 2.7 engine - failure prone?

hyd chain tensioners were dev'd for 3.2's which have mild lift cams and a rev limit of about 6500 (from memory)

are they as reliable in a very high lift (GE-80 cams) 2.7 that revs to 7300? i've heard the odd rumour that the loads on the chains are higher in this type of engine which can cause failure (esp in long distance events) and mech tensioners are a safer option.

engine is 90% competition 10% street and serviced before every event.

Porsche thought the hyd. tensioners( engine oil pressure fed self adjusting hyd. tensioners are the best) ) were better than fixed idlers (mech.) and used them in there race engines and the early 2.0 ran regularly over 8,000 RPM's. Mech tensioner's are inferiour, cam drive steel chain tension is constantly changing with engine temp and a self adjusting tensioner is considered mandatory by Porsche on the 911. The diffrence between loose and to tight is slight, shock loads on a whipping chain goes up exponationaly. If you run mech. tensioner you will need to check the tension regularly , on my SM, Maserati recomended every 2,000 miles. that is for a street car, on a Porsche you will have to jack up the car and remove the muffler and chain box covers and tin etc. and it should proably be done while it is hot so you have a clue to operating temp. tension. Sounds like a hassel to me for no real gain. go self adjust , Porsche did

I would think the safest and kindest to your chains and gears long term would be pressure fed with mechanical stops inserted in the chamber.

Shops that don't recommend Carrera Tensioner Update?

bobby - great link, thank you. i've never seen the Woods internal mod before.

p.s. does anyone know why the collars for mech tensioners can't be fitted to hyd tensioners.
