Mechanical Chain Tensioner Adjustment?

RECENTLY PERFORMED ENGINE SWAP. NEW ENGINE HAS MECHANICAL CHAIN TENSIONERS (MODIFIED SEALED TENSIONERS) I LIKE THE IDEA, BUT READ SOMEWHERE THESE NEED TO BE ADJUSTED AT REGULAR INTERVALS. HOW TIGHT SHOULD THE CHAINS BE? HOW DO I KNOW WHEN THEY NEED ADJUSTING???

Not too tight when cold since the aluminum and/or mag engine will expand more than the chain will.

Just replace them. If you want to do it the best way put in the Carrera Pressure fed tensioners. If you want to do it the cheap way put in the early style tensioners with guards. If you update the idler arms and put in the guards the old style should give many years of service and not be too expensive to do.

up date idle arms

Hello

Can some body explain me how up date idle arms?

Eagledriver 02-22-2005 10:16 AM

The update is to use 1980-on "Chain wheel Supports" (idler arms). They are available in my performance parts catalog on page 121. I'm sure they are available from pelican parts as well. Not cheap but might be cheaper than the Carrera tensioners.

You will need to adjust the tensioner so you have 3mm clearance between the tensioner and the idler wheel pivot contact point . I have found this to work well!
