Is a top end rebuild required to change case thru o-rings
Hi Guys,
I had a couple leaks that needed to be addressed one of them the camshaft o-ring The others were case thru bolt o-rings My car has 53k with great compression and leak down numbers The pcar mech said that the top end needs to come off to change the case thru bolt o-rings is this true? Why do I have to spend 4k for some leaky orings |
I would guess, yes and no, or it depends, if you look at this
http://www.addictionmotorsports.com/images/DSC00129.JPG you can see the bolts in question, if it is the nut side that is leaking you are home free, but if it is the bolt side, then, once the heads are on I doubt you can get the bolts out to put the o-ring on. however, you might be able to loosen them up and put sealant on them without pulling them out. I have not tried putting the o ring over the head of the bolt, it might go.... be sure to find out which ones are leaking first. Jim |
yes your right but on the nut side there is a clerence problem too
or can I pull the bolt out on the other side a little and a little onthe nut side so the nut drops out |

the cylinders need to be off. use green o rings. the blue ones suck.

really...I would have guessed the nut could be removed, but you have to trust the true experts, I have not tried, I am betting John has.

stretching the o ring over the bolt head washer would be a stretch, and how would you torque them properly? not much room in there.

ah, forgot about the washer, that is what happens when you are sitting in an office and taking a break reading PP, so I guess the only cheap temp solution would be clean it up and goop some sealer on them and hope for the best, I know I would try that before I dropped $4K for a small oil leak.
Might not work, but I would feel better knowing I tried. Jim |
