Cost of re-boring/plating/honing 95 mm to 98mm
Just got a price back from an Aussie shop for boring out my 95 mm nikasil cylinders out to 98mm to fit a set of JE pistons. I've got sticker-shock.
They want A$2600 for the boring, plating and honing. That's USD$1,950, or $325 per cylinder. That seems outrageous. Can anyone else provide some other datapoints? Anyone in the US who does nikasil cylinder boring/plating/honing on short notice for decent prices? Thanks! John |
$325/cylinder is a bit high...we can do ours here int eh US for about $220/cyl. I'll be doing a couple of sets of 98mm conversions this spring.

look up "LN Engineering" http://www.lnengineering.com/index.html

Magic...USD$ 2749 is more than USD$ 1,950. Am i misunderstanding you?
Thanks John |
Engine Builders Supply does it for around $1000 for 6. Millenium Technologies does the actual work or at least the plating.

2749 is for a brand new custom set, a replate will be substantially less. I recommended LN because I bought a set from them last year and Charles was an honest guy to work with.
|
Ahh, thanks.
Chris, do you have a link or phone # for EBS? Thanks! John |

In the UK its £112 per cylinder plus tax of 17.5%, so a little more than USD220.
|
I looked into it here also... Too much $$. I bought brand new from the US (Pelican). Even with tax, gst and shipping coming in at $2700 for genuine Mahle, I felt this was better value than replating.

John, et al, the better question you should be asking yourselves; is a 3.1% increase in displacement worth nearly $3000? IMHO, it is not. No rocket science here, a 3.1% increase in piston bore will result in a 3.1% in power in same modded engine. So, if a JE pistoned engine with 95mm cylinder bores is producing 300HP, look to find the 98mm engine to produce about 9HP more. 9HP for $3000 is not a good "bang-for-the-buck" mod. There better performance returns for the dollar can be found elsewhere.
|
Dave, what if you have to buy new pistons for your build anyhow (cam and induction changes determined)? Do you go with the 95mm pistons? I haven't seen a 3.0 or 3.2 NA engine that can make 300 HP. Even Ralph's 3.5NA streetable engine doesn't see 300HP.
You have to consider the build as a whole....purpose and replacement parts cost. Weigh all of that and you might conclude the 98mm is a nice step up w/o much more cost..certainly not a $3000 difference. You can get/create 98mm P/C's for a build for about $2000 "new." |
Souk,
I used 300HP as round number just to illustrate a point. Yes, 300 is an extremely "optimistic" number. The point I am trying to make is if the existing cylinder bores are ok, the increase in bore does not justify the cost vs. performance gain. Must of us, I think, rebuild on a budget and spending around $1500 for about 6-8HP, can be better spent elsewhere. |
Right, Dave. For budget build, I would only replace the parts that need to be replaced.

If JohnJL is in the same boat as I was, then he has out of spec Alusil P&C's. I decided that there was no point building another 2.7CIS so I went with an overall change to a 2.7RS spec engine. I priced having the Alusils rebored to 2.8 and plated here in Australia to suit some JE's I figured I could buy in the US. It was far too expensive here to go with that configuration. I bought a complete new set of Mahle 2.7RS P&Cs from Pelican for $1500 USD this time last year. With our dollar doing very well against the USD at the moment, this is something I wouldn't hesitate to do again.

I'm not sure if this has been said in this thread but you can't use 3.0 cylinders because they have the ring groove on top. you need to start with 3.2 95s, which is why the guys from EBS are always posting wanted ads for 3.2 cylinders in the for sale & wanted forum.
