What should a valve job, seals and guides range in cost?

Hey Ken,

I am in the boat as you are, looking for a head rebuilder. Do you have any local DFW machine shop you know of? I've searched and it looked like it should be ~550, but that's in CA.

Zim's Autotechnic - Has very competively priced parts and is capable of doing your heads inhouse.

After researching valves I've decided there is only one valve to go with and that's the "intervalve" swiss made OEM part. Be carful about the OEM thing in the parts bizz... There is no way (in my mind) a non-sodium filled TRW exhaust valve can be a replacement for a sodium filled valve... But if you look long enough you'll find that advertized...
Zim'z has the sodium filled "Intervalve" for $32 and it's undercut to boot...

Mayo Performance (Mayo in Pano...) Can do it and is also an excellent shop, not so much into parts but more into customer race cars and plenty of them.

Both are located in the DFW mid cities...

Are you in the DFW area? I'm planning on using Mayo perfrormance,(817-540-4939, ask for Tom) for as much as I can where practicle.( they are in the Ft. Worth area) They helped me with my 928 and have a good reputation. They do alot of their own work... I think they do heads? I haven't tried them for a quote yet.

Aside from the '69S and Turbo I didn't know the factory valves were Sodium filled. I had a set of heads done a few years back and the guy who does my heads got some Swiss valves. Can you tell me more?

The identifying feature of the sodium filled valve is a small counterbore on the face of the valve...

The club sport had a sodium filled intake valve which IMO was more about saving weight since the rev-limit was extended to 6840 RPM...

Yes, I am in Dallas. I am trying to figure out whether to send it out (like Ollie's) or to have the wrk done here locally.

BTW, the engine is a 964 3.6.

Is Ollie's the $550? I got quote of $850 from stoid racing no valves no seats. I know A guy that had his turbo done locally for $600, but a couple of years ago? I understand that Zim's is a good shop, I 'buy parts from them from time to time... Kirk in their parts department is excellant. Tom at Mayo's does alot (if not all) of their race work.. really knows his stuff and takes the time to help. He's why I'm leaning toward Mayo for my machine work.

Zims doesn't do machine work unless they do the complete teardown. Mayo said to bring it in since they have no experience /w a 3.6 head.

I also got $850 from stoid. Anyone had headwork done from them? I guy I know from the Z-car group said he had a bad experience from Stoid.

I was under the impression (from the parts house) that the TRW exhaust valves that I bought are sodium filled. Anyone know for sure that that info is wrong? Thanks.

Aren't the Porsche valves made by TRW? I've got used SC, Carrera and 964 valves kicking around. Which, if any, of these are supposed to be sodium filled?
The idea of cutting into a sodium filled valve stem gives me pause for some reason. Is Sodium from a bad neighborhood in the Periodic Table?

with exhaust valves i allways toss them....intakes if they are not near perfect (after faceing a couple,,if the margin is close I toss these too)Its like insurance.the valves have one of the hardest jobs in the eng. W.O.them you do not run,,and if they fail other parts will end up trashed too.
I thoght all 911 ex valves are sodium,,(I could be wrong)you can use after market stuff (S.S)but for what ever reason Porsche did not......least that has been my understanding till now.

i'm with you afterburn. the stems get worn to a taper too. use a mic to find out. if you replace the guide to fix the stem slop, why reuse a valve with a worn stem?

On the sodium issue. I believe TRW made both sodium and non-sodium filled valves. And they are an OEM supplier of (some) valves. What I saw in some advertising was a play on words. They are an OEM supplier but maybe not for your particular application.

TRW had some problem valves where the surface finish on the stems was too rough and the valve guides wore out prematurely.

Supposedly TRW is packing it up due to the EPA and smelting issues???

I've found sodium filled valves in two 2.7 engines. I haven't checked any 3.0 or 3.2 valves yet.
