Oil leak at thermostat

I’m trying to fix a leak that is coming out of the thermostat (I think). Thank goodness its on a 914 and not the 911SC that my 3.0 came out of. At lease I can access the area without too much trouble.

Anyways, I put new crush washers on the pressure gauge so I’m fairly certain that’s not the source. The vent hose fits snug so it not coming from it. I installed a new o ring on the thermostat this weekend, but when I took it for a ten minute drive there was oil around the area. Today I removed the thermostat to test it and the plunger didn’t open when I heated it up. New one is on order.

The leak just appeared a few weeks ago and the engine has less that 1000 miles on a rebuild. I did a tour with the leaky engine just over a week ago and put about 300 miles on it. The temperature gauge never got over the half way mark. It a new gauge and doesn’t have number on it, but I’m guessing that half way is still in the safe zone.

If the thermostat was stuck could the engine still run at reasonable temperatures if the oil wasn’t running through the cooler? Would the stuck plunger account for oil being pressed by the o ring? Should I be using a sealer between the thermostat and the case?

As you have noticed, the oil cooler does jack squat which is why I sell and make delete kits that have a 993 filter console instead of the cooler. Nobody notices the cooler missing, which is why its not on 964 and 993 cars.

There is still some pressure in there, so my guess is you had a thermostat stuck closed and a weak gasket which contributed to the oil having to go somewhere.

Do not put sealant of any kind in the housing; you can use a little Curil T around the thermostat O ring. Oh, get a new o ring.

I had small cracks in my crankcase vent hose that would allow oil to drip down into that area. Replacing the hose isn't a bad idea if its got any age on it.
