Break in day 2, runs great above idle

How far out should the idle mixture screws be out on Zenith/Webbers. Haynes says 2 1/2 turns. Should I go there?

2 1/2 is just the starting point. you also need 0.55 idle jets. there are a lot of 0.45 and 0.50 jets still in use and they just don't work well with today's gas. get it hot, set the idle speed at about 1200, turn one screw in until you hear the idle speed drop a bit and then turn it out just to the point it recovers well and idles the fastest. then do the next one. when you've done all six, hopefully the idle will be better and not want to die. drop the speed to 1100 and go around once or twice more. if you close your eyes and tune in to the sound of the engine while you do the adjustments, it's easier to hear minute changes in RPM.
the timing must be adjusted properly before you do the carb adjustments, or it's a waste of time.

That little statement made all the difference.
the car is idling right at 980-990. Perfect driving at the higher RPMs. No pinging and no backfiring, and no smell of fuel.
