3.6 cam choice
 

Is there enough room to go to a wilder cam with the stock 964 pistons as long as I get away from the common plenum manifold? Or do most people just go on ahead to a 3.8 once they get this far into a 3.6?

Lets say that you found a 964 longblock with no induction and were planning on going to either carbs or ITBs. Which cam would you upgrde to?

Check with John (camgrinder) on this one. He just did my 964 cams but I am saddled with motronic (for now) so I went with the relatively milder DC20. Oh and I have emmissions testing to deal with as well. I would bet you could get a pretty big cam in there though. If you are going to the expense of ITB's how about another 1k for some JE that have a bit more compression and a lot more valve room? I would also look at maybe the bigger 993 valves with thinner stems as well. Oh wait, I am looking at that already!

stock pistons are already over 11:1, IIRC. I havent bought it or anything, but Im starting to seriously think about it since my 2.4 is out of the car. Its a longblock only, no DME or induction. I wont have a knock sensor unless I go to a full engine management system. Realistically I would go to carbs and crankfire because of the money involved. With no knock sensor, I dont want to chance anything higher than stock compression if its anywhere near 11:1 already. I dont have to worry about emissions due to my cars age.

I think if you measure the compression you will find it closer to 10.4 or 10.5:1 with the factory piston. Chris Bennett has measured these I think. I think the carbs and a good exhuast and crankfire would make a nice powerful motor.
