CV JOINT- Can I do it myself - 88 Cab

I just did a search on the form & found lots of info on 944 - CV joint replacement.

Some said it was very straight forward. "AKA Clarks-garage"

I am not a mechanic, but I do have some skills & some tools.

Is this a job for an amature or should I leave this to the professionals?

Keep in mind I would like to replace the joints not fix em'

BTW: Pelican price on this seems very high.....

88cab

Thank you
PS: is there any tips that i should know about.....

It's pretty easy. I've done it several times on my old 914. You needed a speacial "triple box" bit to get the half shafts off, but that's about it.

It is not a hard thing to do, but why replace if you could rebuild? If the bearings are scarred or if the traps are damaged, then replace. If nothing is wrong with them then just clean, repack, and put on new CV Boots. Make sure you apply proper torque to the bolts and check them again after installation and 100 miles driving.

I don't know about 944 pricing, but the 911 CV pricing is very in-line at Pelican with what I have found for new. I just repacked mine.

Doing it yourself will save a few dollars over buying preassembled shafts. There is a description of how to do them on this thread.
