cam timing for C2 cams in a 3.0
A friend was complaining to me today about a lack of power in his new 3.0L engine with C2 cams.
He says he is cornering faster, and about 4 Sec slower and it must be that his cams are not set up correctly. I am sure there could be lots o things that have left it down on power and I am open to any suggestions. Even funnies. He did ask if I could find out what the cam timing should be for a 3.0 with C2 cams. I believe he said he set the overlap at about 1.76. His redline is at 6300. Any thought here would be great. Thanks

They should be set at 1.26mm for the factory spec. The ones I do are usually set to 1.30mm. Hope this helps.

Doesn't want/need a 3.6L
|
Don't take it as gospel, because my memory from 10 years ago is hazy, but off the top of my head I recall we were timing them at Andial at 1.25. I just can't remember if this was for the normally aspirated 3.0L/3.2L motors or the 3.3 930 motors.
Hopefully someone with much more recent (and perhaps more accurate) experience can chime in. I would hate for you to rely on my potentially misguided but well intended info. Ralph EDIT: Damn you Jeff! ![]() Last edited by Carrera3.5L; 04-21-2005 at 05:26 AM.. |

I believe I timed mine to 1.4 (or it was 1.2, I can't quite remember). That, I believe, was camgrinder's reccomendation. The car has great low end power and pulls stong all the way up to 6500+ Regardless 1.76 sounds like a lot. What compression pistons is he running? Is it still CIS? There are lots of places the power could have gone.

The pistons are still CIS. If anything, he would have bumped the compression up.
Would the recommended overlap be the same for the car if mostly driven on the track?

The factory spec of 1.26mm puts the cams slightly retarded in the engine. 1.76mm is about 1 degree advanced from the factory setting. I doubt the cam timing is causing the lack of low speed power. I would go back in and verify the setting, and check the valve lash. A couple of tight valves might cause the problem.

Interesting. I will forward that to him. Also, would that be the best setting for mostly track use?
We ran at Buttonwillow a few weeks ago and I was surprised that I could pull his car on the straights and as easily as I could. That is not typical of his car. His engine is fresh and mine has 10 years of mostly track driving on it. He has that horrible Bursch exhaust system on it, making any listening difficult. I appreciate any other thoughts as to what the problem could be. Thanks again

Where is the ignition timing set at? Could the engine be detonating?
Most people with his combination are running the SSI exhaust.
