Newbie help - is my engine 3.0 or 3.2?

Hi - I am new, and have a 1974 911 targa which I am rapidly learning about.

The motor appears to be shot and in need of much attention. We are taking it apart tomorrow - and there has been some contradictory info from different suppliers at to whether it is a 3.0 or 3.2 litre.

The engine number is 7318935 which I had interpreted to be an SC motor from 1981, probably imported into Australia [where I am] from Japan?

So this will be an SC 3.0 litre? Right?

The VIN is 911 431 0220 - which means 1974 911 S Targa?

If anyone can confirm this definately for me straight away as this will allow us to order some parts in - it would be fantastic!

Thanks

James

The number doesn't look correct. Is the number 6318935?

The 7 would suggest a 7 cyl. car and 911s' being 6 cyl. start with a 6.

Assuming the number is 6318935 it would decipher as follows:

6 = 6 cyl.
3 = ROW or Japan. 4 = US
1 = year 1981
8 = Japan
935 = seq. ser. no.

1981 Japan 3.0SC engine type 930/17 180HP@5500

Thanks Bobby. The number definitely starts with a 7... I dont know what that means.

I thought the motor was 1981 SC 3.0 litre - and that this meant it was the 204 hp motor - that the 180 hp finished in 1980?

eg at http://www.theautobahn.com/forum/showcar.php?do=overview&car_model_id=258

Is there any way we can check for sure from any parts that will be inside the motor?

Cheers

James

Usually the motor type will be stamped on thetop of the case next to the right side of the fan support that the serial number is serial number is stamped on.

For an 81' SC you should see 930/17
