				Question About Piston/Cylinder Stamp Marks

I know where to find the size designation (for spec'ing purposes) on my pistons and cylinders, but I've also noticed stamped numbers corresponding to where each of my pistons and cylinders belong. That is, each piston and cylinder has a tiny "1, 2, 3 and so on" designating their position around the engine. Did the factory do this or a rebuilder? The engine I'm referring to is a later-cased '83 3.0. Thanks! Brian

I've never seen the cylinders marked for position except from a rebuilder. I suspect that is the case here. -Andy

While cleaning my cam towers, I've found "1 ... 2 ... 3" and "4 ... 5 ... 6" stamps on those as well. At least it verifies my own labeling system for reassembly, but why not just an R and L for right and left? Brian

Interesting. +1 on rebuilder. They probably had to match piston and cylinder diameter groups and then sorted the piston pairs by wiehgt for reassy. Or wanted to keep the p/c pairs matched. I just used a hand scribe, but the stamping looks nice and is more permanent. I believe Anchor Atlantic stamps the heads with the owners name so its not an uncommon thing to do. Best regards, Michael
