Replace head studs again?
I tore down my core today and see that the lower (exhaust) head studs appear to have been replaced already with 993 items. The tops appear to be standard steel, in good condition.
I had already ordered a new set of steel studs from Pelican, so my question is should I sell those off/trade them or put them in? The motor will be for track-use, it seems this would be at least its second re-build, so it may have led a hard life before me.... thanks |
What you have is good for street. Since you are building it for the track, and you have all 24 new. Go ahead and have them replaced. Good luck

What type of studs are the new ones?

New ones are steel originals from Pelican.

what engine? mag cases really are better off with new dilivars. less strain on the case inserts. steel on aluminum cases is generally accepted. no harm using whatever you want though, but they should all be the same material.

Thanks John.
Mine is an 81 or 83 aluminum case. I saw Wayne recommended re-using the steel ones in the rebuild book, but I hear many people here talk about replacing every time, so was looking for some more input. Your reputation preceedes you, so you re-use what looks like good steel and 993 bolts if they are already in there and there were no stud-related issues apparent? john |
reusing steel studs if fine, as long as they are not rusted to the point where they are pitted. personally i would use steel on all of them.
