Arrrrggh!! Those brown-headed chuckle____s lost two of my cylinder heads in transit to Ollies. Brown is such an appropriate color for UPS. They only lose the really important shipments.
Of course I had done a mild CNC intake port & blend to them. (Can you hear my teeth cracking?) I had them insured for $100 each (bare) as I shipped the valves etc in a separate box. I have already bought pistons with minimized head to chamber clearance, valve/piston clearance etc so I need heads that have NOT had the sealing surface cut or a prior valve job. Bad guides are fine I was going to replace them anyway. They can be either 32mm ports or the '72T only 30mm smog ports as I will have to re-port them to match the other 4. I prefer them not bead blasted- I have seen an awful lot of junk on Ebay with a bead-blast disguise. All I need is the bare heads. Can anyone spare two 2.2-2.4 heads? Thanks, Bill :-(

Thanks guys. While UPS is still looking for them on the West Coast they just arrived on my doorstep today. I will have to re-ship them. Better than losing them.

Seems they cant find a thing until you put in a claim... and then the box mysteriously appears.

That happened to my neighbor. He order a pair of cylinder heads for a Mustang Cobra. The parts were shipped thru UPS and they lost the package. After the claim, the heads arrive 5 months later.

Oops. I spoke too soon. It was another box of parts I was waiting for. What to do now I don't know.
If I buy replacements now and the lost heads show up I am out $300 for heads I don't need. If I wait I am delayed. If I have to wait and file a claim I am still out the $100 I underinsured them and I am delayed. I think this is called a no-win situation. Don't believe what UPS shows you on their tracking system. They don't really know if the package really went into the final delivery van, only that it was supposed to. They don't even know if it arrived at the end terminal. All they know is the trailer it was supposed to be on arrived at the terminal. Their web-based tracking information is pure BS. I used to be a dock supervisor at a major Yellow Freight terminal. I grilled them about it.

Bill,
I have some spare heads from a 2.2E. Not positive they are rebuildable, however: most of the guides are really really worn and getting them out could be a problem. I just bought a 914/6 in Alabama and will be driving up through Ohio over the weekend, going through Cincinnati and Cleveland etc . . . If we can arrange a meeting where I don't have too much of a detour, you can have a look at them and decide if you want them. Michel Richard |

I try and put some information inside the box when I ship UPS or U.S. Postal. This way if the outside label is pulled off someone can open the box and still know where it goes.
I had a customer ship a box to Turkey. The box had a timing card with my phone number inside. The box was lost for 2 weeks and Fed Ex contacted me and I was able to put them in touch with the shipper. I insure every shipment for the full value. I find shipping companies will look for high value shipments, and just pay the low value ones like your $100 box. The rule "Expect the worst, and hope for the best" surely applies to shipping.

The next shipment will have the value tripled. Good idea about paperwork in the box. That would only work if someone opened it at some point and cared. When I asked the UPS employee in Anaheim where the 'lost' packages went she said 'somewhere in the midwest'. Can you imagine the size of that facility? I wish it were near my home. There would be some tremendous deals. I am sure there are many businesses locally who buy and resell UPS' salvage.

UPS lost a $700 shipment of horse supplies (they delivered it to the wrong house and then did not know which house it was), The vendor then re-shipped via UPS and no one knows where that shipment went. So, three months later after having to re-purchase everything (from a different vendor) and having FEDEX deliver it UPS found the second shipment and then wanted us to re-imburse them for the cost!
Oh, they also lost a horse blanket sent by a friend who did not insure it, fish supplies from a company who only used UPS and we do not use anymore, and some clothes my wife ordered. All shown as delivered and signed for, no signature available for review and no address delivery listed. We never received them.

Michel,
Somehow I missed your post. I have already committed to a vendor I buy from regularly and don't want to go back on my word as he gave me a good price (for a salvage yard anyway). Sorry.
