Damage inside engine case...pics

I cracked open my 3.0 case today and found this....the engine was assembled from many donors, so don't know what happened here, but check out what appears to be a hole worn into the aluminum case, revealing what feels like hard black/brown plastic underneath.

Anyone know what that is, what's underneath, if this is a problem?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1119700768.jpg

Isn't that the rear oil passage where the pressure relief assy goes into?

I think asphaltgambler is right, but to be sure, take a wider shot and submit it.

Fishcop 06-27-2005 03:36 AM

They all do it... it's apparently not an issue. Mine was the same, no problem.

Here's a better pic

Here's a wider aspect...just to the right of the damage is the thermostat.

thankshttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1119956774.jpg

My 930 case has that, and a 964 case I just opened has the exact same thing. Therefore I assumed that was there purposefully as part of the casting/manufacture process.

I dunno, to me it looks like a plastic or plastic composite sleeve /insert. Mine looks bubbled, about ready to break. It must have a purpose or it wouldn't be there. Maybe some engine 'gurus' could help us. I want to know.

Fishcop 06-28-2005 05:36 PM

Do a bit of a search... it has come up quite few times with engine rebuild newbies ;)

It looks rough, but it is factory.

asphaltgambler 06-28-2005 06:30 PM

what search words / phrase?

Fishcop 06-29-2005 03:12 AM

Fine, don't believe me... :)

And the quote from Tyson is "There's nothing wrong with your case. That's totally normal. If you want to, you can epoxy the external portions for oil leak prevention."

Thanks a lot guys. I think I'll leave mine alone, I'd be concerned about having a piece of of epoxy break loose in the case...

Hey John

Are you in Sutherland Shire? If so where abouts?

JohnJL 06-29-2005 07:10 PM

I work in Sydney CBD, live in Mosman...Australia IS the Shire to the rest of the world!

Sumotang 06-30-2005 05:36 PM

Why is Australia the Shire to the rest of the world??? Enlighten me.

JohnJL 07-03-2005 12:33 AM

cuz its nowhere near anything else. And thats a good thing.

Except for NZ, I guess that's farther.

Nitrometano 07-14-2005 09:51 PM

Mine dont have that hole.

NevenM 07-19-2005 12:25 PM

Guys

Well actually NZ has stolen the Shire thing post Lord of the Rings or is that the Middle Earth?.

Another reason is that:

Aussie = Shire
US = County?
NZ = Borough/County

I'm sure someone will correct me on this

Neven (in the Middle Earth)

JohnJL 07-20-2005 04:30 AM

Both are awesome. I'm lucky to be here and have business reasons to get to NZ regularly.
