Machine Oil Galleys?
80 911SC 3.0 to 3.2
During rebuild planning to replace the current oil pump with the 1984-89 Carrera oil pump (911.107.008.05). I'm having difficulty reconciling information: > Pelican Oil Pump section: "The upgrade also requires...and the engine case needs to have its oil galleys machined." > Wayne's engine rebuild book - page 76: "Porsche changed the pump design again in mid 1983...If you find that your oil pump is worn out...No modifications to the case are necessary." I THINK both of these are talking about upgrading the 'late style pump 1976-1983' to the 1984-89 Carrera oil pump, but - to me - it's not entirely certain. So, please - some help - what's the experience or consensus? Do late year models (1976-1983) upgrading to the 1984-1989 Carrera oil pump need the oil galleys machined? Or not? If yes - the follow on question is: does 'oil galleys machined' mean they are 'not there' now - at all - and need to be created? Or does it mean they need to be increased in diameter? Or what? If no - whew~! No hurry - no worry~! Or at least one less thing to work and worry about. Thanks in advance! Jim

I think that the only difference between the 76-83 and 84 up is the depth of the oil pickup. The oil galley machining is for the pre 76 cases. The 3.2 didn't have a sump plate and had a depression there instead so the pump had a deeper pickup. I believe you can buy a sump plate with a depression in it to fit the 84 up pump.
This next part is speculation on my part but here goes. The 84 and up pump is not an "upgrade" to your 76-83 pump. They are the same except for the deeper pickup. Unless you have a problem with your 80 pump I'd just reuse it. If I'm wrong then I hope someone will correct me. -Andy

Thanks Andy - good news to know on the galley machining not being applicable to my 3.0
Since this is a total rebuild and upgrade: 3.0 to 3.2 top to bottom rebuild, csi to efi and most relevant to the topic: new oil system: tank, elephant lines, carrera cooler, on-engine cooler - it made sense to me to put a new pump in...the beast had 180,000 miles on it...
