Was laying out parts to start re-assembly on my 3.2 and noticed that 2 of the rod caps were swapped.Meaning, 4 rods/caps have same # stamped on them, other 2 are swapped.Looks like they were swapped before resize honed.Caps are still torqued in place on return to me.
Should I have these redone with the same rod/cap #'s together,or as long as the same rod to piston is maintained, the swapped caps are resized to std.,shouldn't matter???? What is the thought on this? Thanks for replies! Chris ![]() Can post pics if needed

You need to check the side clearance. If the caps were swapped, the rod and cap might be out of alignment forcing the machinist to grind the sides of the rods smooth. This causes increased side clearance from the rod to crankshaft.

John, Thanks for the reply. It doesn't seem that anything other than the big end was resized.Sides of rod/cap appear untouched. Will check for sure tomorrow.
If the side clearances are o.k.,can I use them as is? Thanks, Chris

I would torque them up and measure the inside diameter. Take 3 measurements, on from 12 to 6 oclock and then 2 to 8 and 10 to 4 etc. IF your within .0005" I would say the rods are resized properly.
If you do not have the measuring tools, you can use plastigauge. A tip when torqueing rods on the crank, use two feeler gauges in between the side of the rod and crank to keep the rod from twisting and ruining your plastiguage readings. You could also take the rods back to the machine shop and ask them if they are within spec. Tell them of your concern with the rod and cap possible mix up.

I'd suggest sending them back to get it done right. Think about the next time this engine gets dissembled. Who is going to notice that the caps are mis-matched. The re-assembly will match up the caps with the rods by the numbers. Make the shop fix their mistake instead of trying to make it work.
