Oil pressure case mod
 

I have a 68' aluminum sand cast case. Does the oil pressure mod make sense? I'm being told by my machinist that unless your going to make the car into a racer or autocross queen it's not mandatory. If not, I have the tools to do the mod I'd just like more detailed information on what I need to do and what size orifice needs to be drilled. If the mod is not really needed what about using the turbo oil line restrictors?

I have no idea if putting the updated oil line fittings in my 3.2 is relavant to your situation. Got the fittings from EBS, I think, higher oil pressure at idle, higher pressure to the tensioners because the restrictors are downstream of the "T's", sometimes the oil level can be read when driving compared to never before, hasn't kicked out any parts yet....

Do you mean the oil bypass mod? By all means do it; it's cheap and worth it.

I mean the fitting that goes into the cam towers that has a smaller orfice. Wayne talks about them. I don't know what a bypass mode is...

off topic - your bmw looks very nice... a bit out of price range right now for my son's "first" car but if he gets his grades up....could be in range.

Oh yeah, the oil pressure mod! Sounds like a good idea and sounds cheap enough. Never done it myself.

continue off topic - I was born in Carmel...lived in Watsonville, Aptos and now in Saratoga. My sister lives in Monterey so I'm pretty familiar with this/that area. I'd like to get a car like your BMW for my son Charlie. He is now AXing and of all things beating my times now...and I was no slouch...first LPR most all years and second in GGR one year. He has some sort of natural tallent I guess. on topic - what is the oil bypass mod?

Do you have Wayne's book? I recommend it as it has all of this stuff in depth in it. The oil pressure mod doesn't have to do with the engine case. It entails using a smaller diameter cam restrictor to increase oil pressure throughout the system. I think this was pioneered in the turbos.

Regarding the Monterey Bay, at least you still live there! :) I love Seattle; it is the second best place to Monterey Bay, but it is second. I am priming my wife for one day retiring to the Carmel Valley, but that is a looong way away.

Glad to hear your son has the car bug. We don't have kids at this point, but if we ever do, I sure hope mine love mechanical things as much as I do.

The bypass mod is cheap but you also have to change to a newer oil pump. This might not be so cheap.

The case mod is a Good Thing with any pump in fact.

The later pumps just have a bigger pressure side, taking advantage of the smaller space needed by the scavenge.

Later still, a much bigger pump altogether was shoehorned in...

But the case mod should be part of any rebuild now..there is no downside..rare in motors!

assuming we are talking about the same thing.....repeating... my engine is stock 3,2...I just installed the "updated" oil line restrictors no other mods...no other mods needed were mentioned for my car in the Wayne book or other places...sounds like other engines may want a bigger pump...

The reason for doing the case mod is so you can use the newer oil pump with the bigger pressure pump side. Doing the case mod and using the old pump will not do any harm but will be a waste of money.

Hello Eagle driver.

There is a definite advantage in the mod in all cases(!)... and pumps..

When the motor spills HP oil into the case, less gets back to the tank.

This can lead to oil starvation in left hand sweeping bends...just watch your oil light, or guage!

The mod ensures less work for the scavenge and a plentiful supply for the pressure side..and less aeration..
