Cracked Crankshaft

Hi im having a full rebuild on my 85 3.2 Carrera and have had 2 cranks machined only to be told they are cracked? Is this common and if so can they be repaired? My original crank had a spun a bearing on one of the journals.

Hello there.

Its not uncommon for cranks to crack..

However, no reputable Porsche guy would do any work on a cracked crank...its very easy to test them..

The Industry Standard Test is to drop it from 3 feet carefully and horizontally onto a concrete floor.

Most ring loud and clear, some make a muffled dong, and some fall in half..

Then you can proceed to spend cash on dye and or magnafluxing..

Kind regards
David

3.2 cranks seem to be particularly susceptible to cracking, compared to other 911 engines. may be down to rod bolt issues, not sure.
