Do I replace the Timing Chains?
I have my 3.3 out and on the stand to put in some RSR rocker seals and check the valve timing.
When I rebuilt the top end 500mi ago I didn't replace the timing chains at the car has only 50k miles on it. I ordered a couple of master link chains as I knew I was pulling it out. Should I leave the original timing chains intact or replace them with link chains? |
I would not use master link chains.

Probably original non link chains are better....I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with a master link chain. I would think if there was an issue we would see messages and links considering that probably 100's if not 1000's have been installed. You do need to be carefull with the small "E" clips when installing.

It's kind of that question, "How much do I do when I'm in the engine?"
Since you have the chains and the engine is out, now is a great time to replace the old chains. There is no reason chains with master links won't hold up as well as continuous chain. Remember to replace with linkless chain requires you split the case. No reason to split the case unless work is needed inside. Before you remove the timing chain, check the current timing, position of cam keyways at number one TDC, maybe even check the intake lift at cross-over. Makes it easier to time the cams unless you are a veteran at such things. Bottom line use care and read the instructions regarding the direction of the retainer clip and the direction of each chain. That is to say the closed end of the retainer clip points in the direction the chain is moving. This is for chains with a single clip only. |
