Distributor question
 

I am building a 3.0L engine and have replaced the CIS system with Weber Carbs. In Wayne's book there are references to modifying the distributor from vacuum advanced to mechanical advance. Does anyone have any details of this or any idea where I can get the conversion done. I currently have a very nice Bosch distributor from a 2.7L engine with Pertronix ignitor on it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Just make the springs let the distributor advance from say 10 degrees btdc at 900 rpm to max, ie about 35 degrees at 3200 rpm.

All thats needed is a strobe lite, ie timing lite, and a tach, which you have in the car. get weaker or stronger springs untill you get close, not real critical. Why not real critical? Well as long as you have max advance by about 3000 rpm, your good to 7000 rpm. And all the power is between 3000 and 7000 rpm. If you don't like 35 degrees, just turn the distributor untill you get what you want.

Anything more fancy thant this, you need a real spark control system, eg electromotive, approx $2500 or something real fancy like a Motec system, approx $5000. Of course you loose the carbs and gain injectors to boot. Electromotive did have an old system for about $700 that did just the spark, but its no longer available new.

You remove the vacuum unit, and then use a small sheetmetal screw through one of the holes in the plates to lock them together. Use a stock 2.7 distributor, and get a rebuilt one from Pelican (around $300, I think with a core). This is what I have installed in my car. The rebuilt distributor (BOSCH, factory rebuilt) one solved a lot of ignition and sputtering problems with the car. Now it runs like a champ!
