Wrist Pin/Rod Bushing Tolerance Measurement
 

In speaking with a machine shop today, the owner pointed out that the "small ends" rarely see much wear and although they do measure them, rarely do they find the "small end" bushings out of tolerance. His comment was that as long as you see an even crosshatch from the previous build, you're good.

I don't have a micrometer or bore guage, I do have "feelers," a dial guage, vernier calipers and plastigage. Is there a way to measure for myself if the pins (new JE pins) are in tolerance with the wrist pin bushings?

Getting down to the machine shop is a PITA due to my location and work.

John, the Mahle pistons I put in my RS rebuild required the gudgeon AND the new bush to be brought to the machine shop together to have them machined to match. Although the little ends may not see a lot of wear, it's a small job, and as you can't measure to know for sure, not worth the possible failure.

And how do YOU know the "previous build" was good enough?

Yeah, I convinced my wife to drop them off at the shop tomorrow...
