is this correct

I went calling around to find a set of main bearings for a possible rebuild for the SC. All the engine guys suggest buying factory mains with #8 thrust bearing. well heres a price I got for this 964-101-901-61

$823.14. could this be a typo?

Either a typo or overcharge; Pelican provides a kit with the main and nose bearings plus a LOT of other needed parts for $570.40. See PEL-REBKT-11.

Sounds about right - for oversized bearings.
The Pelican price for this part (OEM-96410190161) $1234.09
It's about $1000 less for normal sized bearings - which is why people avoid boring these cases oversize. The case can be "resized" to use standard bearings for less than the extra cost of oversized bearings.
The part # for the normal size is 96410190100

That would be all the engine guys who have no idea what they are talking about. Who specifically are "All the engine guys?"

The reason why these bearings are so expensive is because no one ever needs them. These cases rarely see a spun crankshaft bearing, and if they do, it's usually cheaper to find a new case ($1200 or so) than to buy these silly bearings.

It was my mistake...I had the wrong number. I was enquiring about.25 over bearings and used the wrong .25 number. Wayne the engine guys I mentioned are some tech writers for Velocity Magazine. They state that the non-factory thrust bearings are cut with the wrong oil grooves, they are straight cut. He said they the whole set should be less than 200 bucks and have the #8 included.

The guy who said that is Greg Brown. Great article: See page 24 of the PDF http://www.porscheownersclub.org/pdf/2002/winter.pdf
That article was written before Porsche roughly doubled the price of their bearing sets.
I know some people don't even replace the #8 bearing at rebuild which might explain why they aren't included in the normal bearing set (unless you get a factory set).

I started to take the engine apart today. Not as hard as I had thought. The little things are what take the time. I bought a engine hoist and a cheap stand last night...do you really need the ring for the stand? the mounts on the stand adjust enough to bolt to the cases. Other than removing the flywheel, I can't see reason to buy the engine ring...Please advise.
