Center Oiling Cams
What cars came with center oiling cam shafts.
I can see how everything else got oiled, but how did the rocker shafts get oiled. Where can I get all the hardware to make the cams oiled. Does anyone have pics of the setup. Thanks Ed |
The only production cars that came with center oil cams were 64-66 911's. In 67 they started changing to spraybar lubricaion. Most air cooled Porsche race cars had either center oiling or BOTH. The early 911 cams are very hard to find in good condition. You also would need the cam box covers and the lines. I would not recommend it for the street, its not worth the effort/expense.

The 906 cams are center oiled. I have the cams & housings, but not the cam chain covers with the center oiling lines. I think these would be pretty hard to find. Not sure what's involve to modify stock cam covers, or if it can be done.

Supertec has them.
Call me. |
I am building a 2.15L turbo. I have a line on some 934 cams. They are center oiling. Thought I would look into what it would take to use them for my motor.
Thanks Ed |
Anybody have pics of what this all looks like.
Thanks Ed |

Ed, the 934 cams are made for CIS. If you are using 6 throttle bodies I would think that there would be a better profile out there for you, maybe you could talk to camgrinder. |
I will be using the carrera intake/electromotive route for intake/fuel/spark.
Thanks Ed |
Oil mist oil everything else (poorly).
Race engines used both a spray bar and center feed. I aggree that 934 cams are a poor choice in todays cam enviroment |
What would be a better choice for cams on a 2.15L turbo race motor.
Also, if the race cars use both the spray bar and the center oiling, does the cam towers also oil the cam journals too, or just the spray bar. Thanks Ed |
I like the Ruff CTR cams.
Cam journals are oiled and the cams and rockers are sprayed. |
Describe your combination. What rpm band are you hoping for?
What is your static compression ratio? How much boost? What kind of turbo? Are you willing to accept some lag to make power at 7500 + rpms? |
John, I respect you opinion highly on cam selection as do I Henry's. Is there a distinct advantage to running center lubed cams in a super hot rod street car (read street legal race car) versus a well oiled conventional setup?
|
I think the spray bar set up is best. I have had a few customers run both at the same time, but I suspect that puts too much oil in the valvetrain area. It was a custom set up with a lot of work, not just a set of early cams and spray bars.

John,
Yes, it does seem odd that the Porsche race cars ran both. I would think that this would put too much oil in the cam towers as well. I have never heard of the valve train being starved for oil as long as everything is running correctly. Even on a race car. My set up is to run a 2.15L turbo, 7:1 compression, 1 to 1.4 bars of boost. I am anticipating my rpm band to run between 5500 and 7000. I have a short ratio transmission. I have not decided on a turbo yet, but it will be a newer style ball bearing turbo. The GT35R or the like. This will be in a 2000lb 911 racer. I do not care how the car performs below even 4000 rpm. This is a dedicated track car with a first gear as tall as a standard second gear. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ed |
Ed, what octane fuel will you run? Which cylinder heads and valve sizes?
|
I plan on only 110, which is what I use now.
I will use the 2.4L heads. Exhaust and intake ports in the 40mm range. Valve size stock for that size head (not sure off the top of my head what those sizes are) Thanks Ed |
