Exhaust stud removal odds
What are the odds of removing all the exhaust studs from a 1977 Porsche 2.7L six cylinder engine without breaking any? I'm planning on applying heat from a MAP gas torch to the cylinder head area adjacent to the stud. What is the best technique? The threads were given liberal application of PB Blaster penetrating oil 4 days ago.
The engine currently has what appear to be 10 original necked studs and two replacement studs with constant thickness. Bursch headers will be used which thinner flanges than the original heat exchangers. Thanks Eddie |

enough heat and double nut they will jump out......but you need oxy propane or better for "enough" heat as the little torches wont scare the studs out

I removed most of mine out of a 1975 2.7L using just heat (they weren't easy). Several were stubborn, and I soaked them in WD40 for a couple of days, and they practically fell out. I wished that I had started with the soaking - it would have saved a lot of trouble. I am told that is NOT usual. Don't force them, and be sure to apply force perpendicular to the stud. Force applied in another direction may break them. Another thing that is not covered in Wayne's book is that the stud length is important. The barrel nuts need the correct length so that the allen wrench has enough room to work properly. I ended up having to re-seat several of mine because they were too long. Rex

I took a pipe wrench and got close to the base....all came out without a problem...this on a 993tt engine. Those pipe wrenches really do bite! Of course you will want to renew them all.

I just changed all mine... it was kind of spooky, they all came out with little or no trouble. I used a Lisle stud extractor that I bought at pep boys.
If you have to drill, someone on the board has a guide for sale, that looks like it might be just the thing.
