Camshaft front-to-back play

I'm checking my valve-piston clearance with a dry assembly and have the right side camshaft in, thrust washer, 3 washers (per previous build) and the woodruff key installed. When I have the sprocket flange installed flush with the camshaft, the camshaft still has 2.1MM front-and back play. Is this normal?

thanks

Well I found once the bolt (this is an DR 20 on an 83 cam) was tightened, the play is gone.

Another question now...I'll do some searching but is there a way around the cam bar tool (p237?) tool?

It seems a but much a tool I'll only use few times.

Great post the other day on making your own early cam holder from a socket with a dremel...

I have used this tool. I can't see an easy way to make it. Lots of torque on those pins. Borrow it for a sixpack seems most reasonable!

Buy it, then sell it on Ebay...

Wayne,
I always did, but now being in Australia, by the time it gets here and through customs it costs 2X the list price.

I've always been happy with and advocate buying from Pelican. My 993 wires, tune up parts, caps, filters, gaskets, and all the rebuild kits for my 911 engine have been top quality and I've received excellent support.

John
