You can use a chain pulley (they are cheap) to raise it on to the stand.

A couple of points I didn't see mentioned. If you are removing only the engine, be sure to disconnect the shift coupling first so you don't bend the shift rod in the nose of the transmission when lowering the unit. As don's car is a 69, and I assume it still has a 901 transmission with an early style clutch, he doesn't have to worry about lining up the TO bearing fork when reinstalling it. On a 72-86 with a 915 transmission this isn't that difficult. There is an access hole in the top of the bellhousing which, with a light and mirror, can give you visual access to the bearings relationship to the fork when sliding the engine back in. In my mind, the biggest PITA in reinstalling the engine, if it was pulled without the transmission, is reconnecting the backup light switch wires. I have seen many instances where whoever removed the engine the last time just cut the wires to it and then used butt connectors re reconnect them, but that's just not right.

As far as getting the engine onto an engine stand, I use a cherry picker with motorcycle tie down straps attached attached to the crossbar and the engine stand head. (You did put the head onto the engine first, didn't you?)

I just went back and reread Henry Shcmidt's excellent step by step and saw he did mention the shift coupler. Sorry for the redundancy.
