Engine is coming out, what else should I do?
Hi
My 89 911 Coupe with 116k is going to Steinels in NE Ohio this winter for a little RnR. Steinels is going to refresh the top end including: little cam work, little port/polish work, refurb clutch, and whatever else i can do until my wallet runs dry. What do you guys think about regearing the final drive to make the car a little quicker? What do you think about putting a lightened flywheel on a street car? What do you think about putting in the higher compression Euro pistons? The gearbox shifts without hesitation or complaint from me in stop n go traffic, when its cold or when its hot. I might do one or two DE events a year. While the car is out of commission, Steinels will allow me to go in on Saturdays, put the car on a lift, remove the wheels and do whatever I want, i.e. clean, clean, clean. Last winter we went through the suspension and brake system and fixed, replaced, repaired and/or upgraded whatever. We also back dated the exhaust to pre 74 with new SSI's etc. Too much to list here. My question is, and you old timers help me here because I'm a new P car owner, about a year, what cleaning/maintenance issues should I address while the engine and gearbox are out? I use the car as a daily driver, 40 miles round trip, in good weather. (Now I can see the long list of wise cracks about "good weather" in NE Ohio, yes, it's snowing outside as I write this.) Hmmm. I've read the 101 book series and have lots of info, but would really like input from the crew here. No replies to date. Did I piss someone off?
I think I'll go get my neighbors 1973 Pinto wagon, fill it up with gas, and drive around until I see an 18 wheeler in my rearview mirror and then give it an aggressive brake check. wj |
964 cams, Steve Wong chip and you should be set. Bumping the compression enables a hotter set of cams but really drains your wallet.

I cleaned the crap out of everything - while it was out replaced the engine sound pad and rear shocks...
