3.3 fully finned cylinders
I'm in the process of rebuilding my 1987 930 and am considering the use of the 965 style fully finned cylinders. My engine only has 42,000 miles and I'm pretty sure that the pistons can be re-used (with new rings). Can JUST the cylinders be ordered or can I only get the kit? Approximately how much $$$? Not sure I'll have the budget for "Nickies", and I think the basic Mahle 965 cylinders would be a sufficient upgrade. Please advise.
Thanks, Jeff |
I'm not aware of anyone selling just Mahle cylinders unless they have a broken set or not. You may want to place a classified ad out there to see if you can find a good set, although there is no guarantee that they will be an exact fit. Make sure to measure your pistons and existing cylinders so you have a baseline to compare to the replacements. You can always coat the skirts to close up the clearance, but in my experience the sacrificial nature of the skirt coatings don't make this solution a particularly long lived one.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, Charles!

Jeff, if you can't find some 965 cylinders another option would be 3.2 cylinders bored and replated to match you pistons.

There are 4 different diameter tolerance groups for the Porsche cylinders. Someone with a good selection of them (EBS?) might be able to get you a matching set but it would be long shot.

If you use the 965 cylinders, don't forget the viton O-rings that fit in the cylinder bases. It will leak like crazy otherwise.
