Intermediate Shaft Gear Pitting
This is my first rebuild and found some pitting on the gear. The second photo also shows a small crack. If it needs to be replaced, would it be wise to replace both the intermediate AND crank gears?
Thanks, Tony Pitting ![]() Crack ![]() |

i doubt that's a crack. the pitting is typical. it will eventually get worse and cause backlash (noise) between the two gears. you probably have some already. i know they're pricey, but if you're trying to do a quality rebuild, it should be replaced. the crank gear is usually fine, but at least check that it's still tight on the crank.

Yes, quality job is what I'm after. I did have some noise that I couln't identify with. Initial thoughts were chain tensioner issues, but when it came apart, all was well. Hmmm, maybe time for a WTB add.
Thanks John! |

Resurrection of an old thread...
I have about the same amount of pitting... Problem is I have the # 1 size gear (930.105.136.01) which is NLA as 'gear only'~!! The whole intermediate shaft assembly - # 1 size - is available, @ $ 601.75 So, with this level of pitting, for a 'quality rebuild', is the new shaft assembly appropriate? Unavoidable?

Goldgunner,
I had this same dilema on my engine. I bought a 0 gear because I figured it would be better to have a new 0 gear than a worn out 1 gear. We'll it worked out perfectly. When I installed the new 0 gear there was virtually no backlash. If I'd have got a 1 gear I think it would have been binding. The 0 gears are available and not super expensive. I'd buy the new 0 gear and see how it fits. I think you'll find it to be a good solution. -Andy

Thanks guys~! Very much appreciate the advice and the offer.
A minor miracle: Troy at EBS came up with a new Size 1 Intermediate Gear.
