Cam help.. Quick advice SS 3.2
 

Hi,

Do 964 cams have a different bearing size than a 3.0 ltr ? Or do you also need to use the 964 cam carrier?

Will a 3 bearing cam fit in a 4 bearing cam housing ? Or should you use an early cam carrier?

Is a 964 cam chain sprocket different? or should the 3.0 lt set up work?

Also, what would be the best cam for my motor: I have a pair of Andial S grind 4 bearing cams but the bearings are to small for my motor (which is now built up).

Motor is a rebuilt 78 SC motor with new 98mm's 10.3:CR, Crank fire ignition, SSIs, 46 PMOs.. what cams as I need to buy some ASAP, or I do have a pair of early S cams (3 bearing one).

It seems that the cams I have are Andial 4 bearing cams with S grind, but with 47mm bearings, which means they fit pre 1978 cam cases. I can get some early cam cases but I am still stuck as the Andial cams take a bolted sprocket while the ones out of the motor use a nut.

Does anyone know when the cam fittings changed?

Hi Alan,
First some data points:
-The 964 cams journals are the same size as the 1978 on ones. Some people use actual 964 cams and cut off the pump drive.
- The end of the cam fittings changed from the big nut to bolt style in 1981 I believe. You could confirm this by looking up the cam fittings here on Pelican.

.. and then some unsolicited suggestions:
I'd sell your 964 grind Andial cams and get the correct sized ones rather than change the rest of the motor so you could use them.

Just my opinion but if I had a motor with your specs I'd run a cam that better suited it. The 964 cam is mild because the shared plenum intake and Motronic engine management system couldn't handle a "happier" cam. I think emmisions compliance had something to do with it too.

Alan, My DC60 profile works well with your combination. And I can make it on 78SC style 49mm billets with the big nut.

The Andial cams I have, have an early "S" grind on them so they will be suited for my motor set up. I have used some earlier cam cases (47mm) and the sprocket set up from a 3.2 motor. The motor is now together so I will let you know how I get on.
