watercooled 911 engines.......

are there any affordable places out there that offer engine rebuilding for the 996 ?

I am seeing some pretty high prices. Considering I can get a stroker LS1 for a Vette at or below some of the stock rebuilt 911 prices, I may not want to get into a 996 afterall. Especially since I want to add forced induction.

Comparing a Vette with a Porsche is laughable. Porsche is a state of the art machine, a Vette is a old dinosaure.

That statement is 20 years out of date. Have you seen new Vettes lately?

The Corvette C6 is one fast dinosaur.

Maybe it should be the quickasaurus.

Considering the horrible things I have been hearing about the 996s and the possibility of having to get a rebuilt engine. Shelling out 10k for a blown engine due to normal driving under 100k miles is lame to me. I don't want to willingly put myself in that position.

If I am handing out 10k to someone to build an engine for me, it should be better than stock, especially if that's rebuilt.

Apples and oranges. Sure 996 is an incredible driving experience. So is a Ferrari. and at the things I have been hearing, it sounds more like a Ferrari than a Porsche.

Yes the vette may not be as nice of a drive, but I don't appreciate getting the big stiffy from a company just because I want a high performance machine.

Go look at the quality record for GM and the vette, then read 4-5 threads about a replacement engine needed (for $10k plus) with 45k, 50k, 66k or 74k miles.

Considering I could upgrade to a 427 stroker LS engine for 10k, I'd rather go with the vette.

but that's just me. Don't like it? You don't have to.

One can buy a brand new 3.6L 996 crate motor from Porsche for somewhere around $10K, a few thousand more more and you can get the X51 package.;)

Does anyone out there even rebuild 996 motors (I'm not talking GT3 motors) besides Porsche? With a new 996 motors being so cheap it wouldn't make much financial sense.
Ralph, you mentioned a in June that the Grand-Am SGS 996 guys were getting factory 996 motors for $7500. Was that a racer-only thing or the going rate for a 996 motor (exchange I assume)?
