Can I replacing case parimeter washers?
 

Well, just put my case back together (82 turbo) and it apprears i got a bum batch of case perimeter washers and they were not hardened. Nuts are really smashing them and I'm finding after few hours I can turn them a little at 18ft/lbs.

Can I replace washers one at a time with good ones??

Are you sure you used the steel ones and not the aluminum ones?

Sure you can replace them... Just do them one at a time...

I use steel washers and metal locknuts for the perimeter bolts. (3.0L and later aluminum case motors.) I'm not sure when I started seeing motors with these fasteners, may 3.2's or 964 motors.

Well, after a night of thinking about this, I decided to not risk it and just split the case again... Clean up was much easier 2nd time around (3hrs to split and clean).

The alum washers were totally smashed. Many stuck on the stud. Going with stainless steel ones this time.

I used the sealant that Henry recommends for case perimeter (three bond 1104) and was very impressed with it. You could see a super thin layer of this all the way around the case. Interstingly enough the loctite 574? on the webs was not fully cured after 16 hours. Only place it was really cured was where it filled in the bearing tab space.

Did you use Brake cleaner to remove the 1104? I found it liquified the 1104 and allowed it to be brushed loose with a wire brush.

Actually used carb cleaner and scotchbrite pad.. came right off. i think that carb cleaner will just about disolve the metal...
