3.6L conversion, whats involved?
Hi all, contemplating an upgrade for my 1987 3.2L to perhaps a 3.6L 993 set of pistons and jugs, any other mods necessary? heads, cams etc....? Thanks for the help, John

Are you talking about an engine swap? Or doing a tear-down and rebuild on your existing 3.2? You can easily do a 3.2 to 3.4 conversion on this motor without machining the spigots. Cost of 3.4 pistons and cylinders...about $4100.00. You also can do a 3.5 and 3.7 liter conversion for alot more money and there as alot of machine work that needs to be done on the case, not to mention rods. I just spoke to Peter at Andial and he indicated to me that the cost of doing a 3.7 liter motor correctly would run somewhere around $25,000.00!! Heck it's only money.:D
If you do a search, you find alot on this topic. |
I wanted to know what was involved with modifying with 3.6l pistons & cylinders, if possible, do I need to twin plug, machine spigots? or rejet so as not to lean out mixture? I did try a search with limited results, Thanks, John P.s also wanted to upgrade to 964 cams while in there

I'm not sure about the 3.6 P&C's. Maybe someone else can chime in on that one. As far as twin plugging goes, I am going to get mine done, however, it also involves modifications to the ignition system and it is most beneficial on motors with higher compressions. I will also be switching to PMO carbs and that will allow some more flexibility with cams. Since you mentioned "re-jetting" I am assuming you already have carbs.

The 3.6 has different head stud spacing than the 3.2 AFIK.
JE pistons and bored replated cylinders will get you to 3.4L for around $2100. -Chris |
Thanks Chris, thats all I needed to know I'll probably stick to the 3.2 with the 964 cam upgrade and some exhaust modifications and perhaps a chip, thanks for the info, Johnny O

John,
It gets expensive to do it right:) Chris, I contacted Bob over at Atlantic in NJ. Real nice guy! Thanks for the lead! |

I know 964 cams are popular but IMO they are kind of expensive for the performance difference once you figure in all the other expenses using them entails - reconditioned rockers and stiffer valve springs. I'd make sure the parts you have are working well - clean injectors, replace or repair cracked hoses, upgrade rod bolts etc. A cat bypass and a matched chip is the most cost effective upgrade I think. -Chris |
Chris, I'll speak to my mechanic about what you suggest to be honest it's a high mileage car, beautiful but been around the block I want to do the most for the least so I guess I'll concentrate on muffler/cat bypass and chip, the top end was done within 50,000 miles and only uses 1 quart every 1,000 miles, plus I always top up to high line on dipstick, upon reading in these forums I will also try to keep the level at midway mark or just below, I love this site, great membership and full of excellent information, and just plain fun to read, keep up the good work guys!! its always appreciated, Johnny O
